Profile

My name is Mitra and I am 27 years old.  With my family, I arrived in Seattle in 2008 from Nepal. I was born in Bhutan and when I was eight years old, my family and I fled from our home country because of political trouble. For about 17 years, we lived in a refugee camp in Nepal. This is where I grew up and went to school. I completed my Bachelors in Sociology from the Kalilimpong College in West Bengal, India. In 2007, my family applied to be resettled in the United States and were granted our eligibility letter to resettle a year later. When we arrived in Seattle, the International Rescue Committee helped us to be a part of the community. In 2010, I married my beautiful wife, Shobha, who is from Nepal and we met here in Seattle. I now work as a Clinical Case Manager at the Asian Counseling and Referral Service. I also work as a medical interpreter at the Seattle and King County Public Health Refugee Screening Clinic. In addition, I am the community organizer and advocate to help newly arrived refugees transition to their new community in Seattle. I also would like to share my goal to go back to school and earn a degree in Public Health to continue my commitment to better the lives of resettled refugees. Lastly, I've been attending the Home Away From Home Thanksgiving event since 2008 and greatly appreciated when my family and I were welcomed to the community.
